Baby Led Weaning

Michelle was directed to another quadruplet mom’s Instagram page when doing research on feeding the babies solids. Katie Ferraro, of Fortified Family, offered a wealth of information and Michelle was instantly engrossed in her thought process and techniques.

Not many are familiar with the self-feeding technique called baby-led weaning, but this is very popular in the United Kingdom and growing popularity in the US. According to this method, Baby-led weaning allows babies to control their solid food consumption by “self-feeding” from the very beginning of their experiences with food.¬†Essentially it encourages skipping purees and going right to solid foods. Research shows that by introducing babies to the widest variety of foods between 6 months and 18 months of age, the likelihood of developing a picky eater will be greatly decreased.

We began employing BLW in May and the babies have done incredibly well! At this point they are eating everything that Mommy and Daddy eat (without added salt or sugar.) They’ve even tried sardines and liked them!

The foods that the babies enjoy the most are sweet potatoes, bananas, any kind of muffins, meatballs, shrimp, salmon and grains such as millet, farro, and risotto. We could not be any more proud of the progress they have made, and continue to make!
